I went undercover to help Bali's dogs.
Animals Australia

Here's what it takes to infiltrate a dog meat gang in Bali.

%firstName%, if we passed each other on the street, you wouldn't notice me. My identity is secret because sadly, there are those in this world who would wish me harm simply because of the line of work I'm in.

I'm an undercover investigator for Animals Australia.

In recent months it was my job to win the trust of dog meat gang leaders in Bali. If I could pull that off, I could document aspects of the hidden dog meat trade that had never been documented before. My cover story was an interest in filming preparation of 'local cuisine'. That enabled me to have access to all aspects of the trade from catching, to slaughter, to the butchering of dogs. Pretending that I wasn't devastated every time that I saw a dog being horrifically abused was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do as an investigator.

As an animal cruelty investigator I have trained myself to cope with cruelty, but nothing prepared me for this assignment. I focussed on my camera work but it was absolutely gut-wrenching to hear these dogs voice their sense of betrayal. They were literally screaming and wailing in terror and sorrow.

The urge to intervene as defenceless dogs were being shot, bludgeoned or hung was almost overwhelming. But I knew that jumping in and helping that one animal might make me feel better, but it won't stop another and another from enduring the same fate and this shocking cruelty continuing for years to come.

That's why I work with Animals Australia. Because cruelty exists whether we confront it or not -- but with awareness, intelligent campaigning, and with a global supporter base full of compassionate people like you, real and lasting change is possible.

I've witnessed enough horrific cruelty in different places to know that that's what animals need most.

And now, thanks to you, we are closer than ever to achieving change for animals in Bali. The coming weeks and months will be defining. How the Bali government chooses to respond to the current global outcry will seal the fate of thousands of animals.

Now our job must be do to everything possible to encourage the Government to make the right decision.

Thank you for standing alongside me, for the animals.

P.S. Without the Animals Australia investigations unit, I wouldn't be able to do what I do for animals, and cruelty like this would remain forever hidden. You can help send experienced investigators to where animals need us most by giving to the Animals Australia investigations fund. P.S. As a monthly donor to Animals Australia, you're the reason I'm able to do what I do for animals -- exposing cruelty that would otherwise remain hidden. But sadly there are more animals in need of help. Would you consider upgrading your support for our work today to help free more animals trapped in cycles of cruelty?
